smiling

Look at the smile on that face. Hell, he’s got a cat right next to him and he’s still smiling. I’ve never seen a happier cancer-laden, arthritic 13 1/2 year old dog. Have you?
I think I told you (both of you?) my goodest good boy has cancer. But to verify, I’d have to go back to a part of the blog I’m none too anxious to revisit.
His emergency spleenectomy was in early February. My vet (who is also a dear friend) reluctantly told me to give Henry two, maybe three months before we’d be facing some tough decisions.
Five months later, everyone smiles broadly when I bring this smiling boy to the vet. Almost as broadly as Henry.
I think love is keeping him alive. Maybe it’s our love for him. But I think it’s his love for us.
Something told me to get him to the vet in those dark days of February. And something tells him I need him to be with us a while longer.
Every day, I check. Is he still smiling?
And so far, every day, the answer has been yes.
To quote Deckard,
Gaff had been there, and let her live. Four years, he figured. He was wrong. Tyrell had told me Rachael was special. No termination date. I didn’t know how long we had together… Who does?

Dear WingDangDoo,
These animals, the ones we call pets, I do not think ever leave us.
Henry loves you much.
I won’t tell you more till alter.

You’re right, Henry knows what’s up. I am also thankful for my new four-legged addition Phoebe. I was missing out on some serious love and affection. I should have listened to you long ago and gotten a puppy sooner. I still can’t believe you have a cat. Remember how nice we were to Carolynn’s cat?

Sorry about that. I was being impatient.
