come, they implore us

Written by patty on September 1st, 2009

Come. they implore us. Put aside your dirty dishes, your iPhones, your ideas. Come. Come on already.

They take us to the first station, where we play Connect Four for tickets. Me against him. I win. I’m rewarded with 100 yellow tickets, which I circle around my neck like a necklace. He gets four, for trying. It’s good to be the mom.

They bring us into the back yard. They’ve set up cones, maybe 10 of them. Hit a cone, get some tickets. Hit the fence, get more. Our two yellow tickets apiece are carefully hole-punched. I can spot you more tickets if you need them, I whisper. We throw softballs and are rewarded with tickets. Again, I get more. It’s good to be the mom.

There’s a final station, a final chance to win tickets in a game of skill. Come, I implore them. It’s cold. Come inside. The first day of school is tomorrow. Flashlights, tables, this roll of tickets: all inside. It’s time to dream.

Goodnight to the carnival. Goodnight. Where did you get this idea, boys? Thank you. Thank you. Such a fun last night of summer.

I stuff my tickets in a bag, like clowns going back in the clown car. I label it. “mom’s tickets,” it says, Sharpie pen against brown paper bag.

We’ll save these.

Yes, our children really did set up a backyard carnival for me and Paul last night. And yes, I have the sweetest children on the face of the planet.

You transported me to the carnival with this one. Lovely story. Kiss those monkeys.

My four year old grandson and I play Costco Man. While wearing at least ten of my old badges on around his neck, mans the front door. With clipboard in hand, he and crosses off a homemade receipt with a highlighter. Then he checks me out the front door with my grocery bag. We do this about 100 times before he is done. Weird kid my grandson.

Don’t even ask about the UPS Man game.
