Because we love this ridiculous muppet of a rescue dog so much, we want another one exactly like her.

He had been in the shelter since November 22. I was selecting the day I’d take off from work this week to drive the 7 hours (each way!) to spring him from the hoosegow. A gorgeous boy with amber-colored eyes and brown-black fur, the shelter workers described him as round a year old and very, very sweet. “Call us tomorrow between 1 and 4 so we can tell you more about him,” they wrote me. “We’re considering transferring him to another shelter, because other than you, no one has been interested in him.”

An hour later, he was adopted by someone else.

This, of course, is no great tragedy. The dog got a home! One less behind bars. And really, Patty? Really? It’s not possible to fall in love with a dog based on a picture. You’ve got to toughen up a bit.

It’s no easy feat to find a rescue doodle in the Northeast. I thought I found one… but he didn’t like cats. Another was gone as soon as I saw him. I fill out applications* and list my references and answer the essay question “Why rescue?” We discuss becoming a foster family, because we’d then be first in line to adopt the dog.

*My favorite question by far was “For which illnesses and conditions have you sought treatment for your dog(s)?” Oh, honey. Pull up a chair, because this is going to take a while.

And so I search. And wait. And fall a little in love based on nothing but a picture and some words on the screen.

Good luck! Or current one (a sweet small black la) was rescued from the owner before he gave him to a shelter, that was lucky for both of us cause he has been a wonderful companion.

I fell in love with Wynter based on the picture in the newspaper and online. We’ve had her for a year. How many illnesses have we treated her for?

Honey, pull up a chair …

You’ll find your doodle. I’m sure of it.

I think he was the cutest. No, I didn’t see his picture, what’s your point?

Shocking that you’d feel that way.

Shelter boy was returned to the klink within 24 hours. He went for the big snip this afternoon and will then be in a new shelter. I’m seeing what I can do for him. While he was briefly adopted out, we committed to fostering a puppy, if and when the owners actually give him up. I think it will all be coming together over the next week or so.

As for the cats, they send their love.
